The Cleveland Guardians continue to sort through their roster decisions ahead of Opening Day, but one young player has clearly made a strong impression.
As competition remains tight across multiple spots, Ángel Martínez has emerged as one of the more intriguing names in camp. His performance has not gone unnoticed, especially by manager Stephen Vogt.
“Yeah, Angel had a phenomenal spring. Obviously, we’re working through some things, you know, still. But Angel did everything he could. He had an unbelievable spring, and we’re really excited about the growth that he made and the strides that he made,” Vogt said.

Martinez’s production has backed it up. In 18 spring games, he hit .356 with a .396 on base percentage and a .800 slugging percentage, good for a 1.196 OPS.
It also comes after a rookie season that showed flashes, but also left room for growth. In 2025, Martinez hit .224 with 11 home runs, 45 RBI, and a .628 OPS across 446 at bats. While those numbers were inconsistent at times, they gave the Guardians a glimpse of his potential.
Cleveland will be counting on Martinez to take a significant step forward in 2026. His development could play a key role in shaping the lineup, especially as the team leans on young, homegrown talent.
It also comes at a critical time.
With roster decisions coming down to the wire and injuries already impacting the team, opportunities are there for players willing to step up. Martinez has done exactly that, putting himself firmly in the conversation for a role to begin the season.
And for a young player trying to carve out a role at the major league level, that kind of backing from the manager can go a long way.
As the Guardians finalize their roster, Martinez has made one thing clear. He is ready to contribute whenever his opportunity comes.
