The Cleveland Guardians lost left-handed reliever Tim Herrin on July 8, when he was hit by a comebacker in his left elbow. The unfortunate incident led to a brief absence from the roster.
The next day, on July 9, the Guardians placed him on the 15-day injured list with a left elbow contusion. Fortunately, that’s all it was: there was no structural damage to speak of, so there was always optimism that he would be able to return relatively quickly.
That appears to be the case, or at least we can say that Herrin is trending in the right direction. He is, per reports, set for a rehab appearance this weekend.
“Tim Herrin is set to pitch for Triple-A Columbus tonight. He went on the IL on July 9,” Guardians insider Tim Stebbins said.

Herrin might struggle with walks from time to time. Still, there’s no denying that he has been a perfectly solid reliever for Cleveland ever since making his MLB debut, especially when facing left-handed hitters.
He isn’t expected to require many rehab outings in Columbus. The team, however, wants to see him pitch in actual games and, perhaps more importantly, see how his elbow feels after a game or two in Triple-A before deciding to bring him up.
The lefty is sporting a 3.06 ERA in 32.1 innings this season, so he has been fine from a run-prevention standpoint. His BB/K ratio isn’t the best, though, at 19/27, so he could certainly improve, particularly in the walks department.
Herrin boasts a 3.48 career ERA, though, so he’s used to succeeding even while managing a high walk rate and not that many strikeouts. He may not be good enough to be the best lefty in the bullpen of a contending squad, but he is a perfectly solid second or third southpaw and usually gets the job done.
With Erik Sabrowski going through some struggles, however, the Guardians need him back as soon as possible. It does appear that we will see him back in Cleveland in a matter of days, not weeks, and that’s excellent news.
