The Rule 5 Draft will take place in December, and to protect some of their most valuable young assets, the Cleveland Guardians added Doug Nikhazy, Petey Halpin, Franco Aleman and Nic Enright to their 40-man roster.
They had one available spot, so they had to designate three players for assignment: Peter Strzelecki (traded to Pittsburgh), Connor Gillispie, and George Valera.
Valera is a young, promising slugger who suffered a gruesome knee injury late in the minor league season.
The organization removed him from the 40-man roster, but scooped him up again on a minor league deal on Monday.
“Cleveland #Guardians have re-signed OF George Valera to a minor league contract for the 2025 season with an invite to MLB spring training. Valera is eligible to be selected still in the upcoming MLB Rule 5 Draft,” Guardians Prospective posted on X.

Valera had surgery in September to repair a ruptured patellar tendon in his right knee.
He is expected to be out into the 2025 campaign, but should be able to return at some point next year.
There is an important issue to consider here: he is eligible for the Rule 5 Draft so if he recovers nicely in the upcoming couple of weeks, another organization might take a chance on his upside.
Valera had a 104 wRC+ and 17 home runs for Triple-A Columbus last year, but is already 24 so he needs to take a step forward at some point soon.
If no one takes him in the upcoming Rule 5 Draft, he will stick around and give the Guardians some depth and an interesting project to keep developing.
