If you have followed the Cleveland Guardians offseason, you know that they currently have an opening at second base and right field.
Yes, they could definitely use another starter and a relief arm, but those needs are not as urgent or pressing as second base.
At this point, the team appears to be headed to an internal solution.
If that’s the case, there are plenty of candidates.
Many specialists and fans would love to see prospect Juan Brito win the starting gig at the keystone.
It’s hard to blame them, as Brito is an exciting project that does almost everything right on the field.
Gabriel Arias is also a strong candidate, as he appears to have figured things out offensively after his mid-season demotion in 2024.
Don’t count Angel Martinez out, though.
The Guardians infielder has appeared in many workout and training videos during the off-season.
Some of them have featured him taking reps in the outfield, but others, like this one recently posted by Guardians Prospective, show him emphasizing his infield defense.
“Cleveland #Guardians (INF/OF) Angel Martinez putting in work at second base out at the organizations Goodyear Development Complex,” Guardians Perspective posted on X.

You can see Martinez working on his footwork, throws on the run, fluidity, agility, and other important aspects of fielding.
Martinez, with a glove on his hand, is a jack-of-all-trades.
He is versatile and can cover multiple positions, but he is not really excellent at any of them.
That’s why he has worked so hard on defense during the off-season.
With the bat, he showed off his potential in a 43-game cameo in the majors this past season.
Despite his mediocre 83 wRC+, he flashed his potential for stretches.
Martinez will give you competitive at-bats and has some untapped potential.
He might not be the favorite in the battle for second base in Cleveland, but he has a fighting chance.
