Cleveland Guardians prospect George Valera, who was shaping up as a potential call-up in 2024 or in early 2025, suffered a potentially significant injury this week.
The gifted power hitter was trying to make a play in right field, but things went south when he jumped for the ball and, especially, when he landed.
He had to be carted off the field.
Cleveland baseball reporter Guardians Prospective updated Valera’s status on Wednesday, and said that the team is still awaiting the results of some tests to determine the severity of the injury.
“Valera is currently awaiting MRI results he had taken on his right knee,” he posted on X.

At the very least, Valera is likely looking at some time on the shelf.
The worst-case scenario, however, is much more severe.
The team is surely hoping that the outfielder didn’t tear his ACL or any other ligaments or tendons on his knee.
That would knock him out of the season and potentially take away some of his 2025 campaign, too, depending on his recovery.
There is nothing Cleveland can do at this point but wait until the results of the MRI are ready.
Valera was enjoying a solid season in Triple-A Columbus, with a .248/.337/.452 line and 17 home runs in 90 games.
He had a 103 wRC+, a bit above the league average for the level.
Strikeouts are, unfortunately, a part of Valera’s game, as he struck out in 27 percent of his plate appearances this year.
He is still young at 23 years old, though, and has time fully figure out how to reach his considerable potential.
Hopefully the knee injury isn’t serious and doesn’t get in his way.
