Cleveland Guardians historic reliever Cody Allen was the franchise leader in saves entering 2024, with 149.
Being the leader in any relevant statistical category of a franchise that has existed for many decades is always a cool achievement that deserves recognition and respect.
Allen, of course, is a relevant figure in recent franchise history, part of the Guardians’ dominant bullpen in the 2010s.
Emmanuel Clase, the current Guardians closer, was born to break records… and bats, too, with that wicked cutter.
He established all kind of marks and records in 2024: that’s what happens when you post a 0.61 ERA and save 47 games.
The Guardians posted a video of the moment in which he locked down his 150th save on a Guardians uniform, leapfrogging Allen and becoming Cleveland’s saves king.
“There is no better way to kick off this year’s 12 Days of Guards than with our 26-year-old closer, Emmanuel Clase, slamming the door on our franchise save record,” they posted on X.
On August 30, Clase slammed the door on the Pittsburgh Pirates and took possession of the all-time franchise record at 26 years old.
Imagine how his future saves output could look considering he is already approaching 200 and is still just 26.
He won’t turn 27 until spring training.
He is currently at 158 career saves, and 157 came with Cleveland.
Of course the postseason struggles he experienced in 2024 are concerning, but he was flawless in the 2022 playoffs: there is nothing to worry about on that front as long as he is healthy and fresh.
Clase has multiple years left on his deal with the Guardians and already has enough merits to be considered for the team Hall of Fame.
Cooperstown looks like his future destination if he keeps this up.
