Angel Martinez has turned into one of the hottest hitters in the American League over the past two weeks, and Saturday’s performance might have been the loudest example yet.
The switch-hitting outfielder went 4 for 5 with three runs scored, a double and two home runs in Cleveland’s 12-6 win over the Athletics, driving in four runs in the process. His two homers pushed him to 16 and 17 on the season, both coming on a night when he also fell a triple shy of the cycle. It was the kind of complete offensive performance that does not come around often, even for a player who has been surging for weeks.
The bigger story, though, is what Martinez has done over a much longer stretch. Across his last 14 games, he has collected 17 hits in 50 at-bats, scored 11 runs, added four doubles and a triple, hit five home runs, driven in 12 runs and drawn two walks, all while hitting .340 with a .377 on-base percentage. That is not a hot game or even a hot week. That is more than two weeks of a player performing like one of the best hitters in baseball.

On the season, Martinez is hitting .255 with 17 home runs, 57 RBI and a .759 OPS, numbers that were solid before this stretch but now look like the floor rather than the ceiling for what he is capable of. His recent surge has coincided almost perfectly with Cleveland’s push toward the top of the AL Central, and the timing has not gone unnoticed inside the organization.
This kind of production matters even more given the situation Cleveland finds itself in. The Guardians improved to 80-75 with Saturday’s win, holding a one-game lead over the White Sox at 79-76 with seven games remaining on the schedule. Every extra base and every RBI carries weight this late in a division race that could come down to the final week.
Players do not typically sustain stretches like this one for long, which is part of what makes it so remarkable. For now, Martinez shows no signs of slowing down, and if his current pace continues even for a few more games, he could end up being one of the biggest reasons Cleveland finishes the season on top of the division.
