Tanner Bibee did not have his best stuff Saturday night, but that did not stop him from delivering a clear message about where this Cleveland team stands.
The right-hander struggled through 4 2/3 innings against the Athletics, allowing six runs on 12 hits, an outing that landed among the worst of his career by pitch count and damage allowed. It hardly mattered in the end. Cleveland’s offense bailed him out in a big way, scoring 12 runs and cruising to a 12-6 win that kept the Guardians in first place in the AL Central. Afterward, Bibee shifted the conversation away from his own outing and toward the bigger picture facing this team over the final stretch of the season.

The Guardians improved to 80-75 with Saturday’s win, holding just a one-game lead over the White Sox at 79-76. Because Chicago owns the tiebreaker in the season series, Cleveland cannot simply match the White Sox down the stretch. The Guardians have to finish with the better overall record to secure the division outright, which puts extra weight on every game left on the schedule.
Bibee’s message reflects an approach this Cleveland club has leaned on throughout its playoff push. Rather than worrying about what Chicago does on a given night, the Guardians have repeatedly pointed to controlling what happens on their own field. That mentality showed up again Saturday, with the offense answering an early deficit and never letting the Athletics back into the game, regardless of how the pitching staff performed.
For a pitcher who did not have his sharpest outing, choosing to speak about the team’s position rather than his own struggles says plenty about where his head is at this time of year. Bibee will get another chance to atone for Saturday soon enough, but for now, his focus, and the focus of this entire roster, is squarely on the only thing left that matters. With seven games remaining and their fate still in their own hands, the Guardians know exactly what is in front of them.
