The Cleveland Guardians have at least two heralded position player prospects who are expected to make their regular-season MLB debuts this season. There is a chance that a pitcher may join them.
Like outfielder Chase DeLauter and second baseman Travis Bazzana, right-hander Justin Campbell has had his MLB arrival delayed by multiple injuries. But with spring training opening, the 24-year-old is reportedly healthy and ready to make his mark.
A competitive balance pick in the 2022 MLB Draft, the Guardians’ pitching prospect could make his long-awaited debut in 2026.
“Campbell is healthy and on schedule to participate in spring training and finally make his pro-debut in 2026. Drafted #37 overall in the 2022 MLB draft Campbell underwent ulnar nerve decompression surgery on his right elbow back on 5/23/23 and TJ surgery 4/2/24. Then underwent surgery on his right wrist for De Quervain tenosynovitis on 10/1/24. He was set to make his pro debut in 2025 but had a setback this past July,” Guardians Prospective posted on X.

Campbell has not appeared in a game since his final season at Oklahoma State. The 6-foot-7 hurler has had multiple arm surgeries that have kept him sidelined since signing with the Guardians.
He looked to be on track to finally take the mound last summer, but he has yet to pitch in a professional game. After such a long layoff, it would be quite an accomplishment for him to make it to the majors this season.
Fortunately, the Guardians look to have a solid pitching staff entering spring training. The rotation is led by Gavin Williams, who is a potential AL Cy Young Award candidate. Parker Messick also looks to be in line for a full-season role after making an excellent debut as a late-season call-up last year.
In the bullpen, the Guardians will again be without closer Emmanuel Clase. He is not allowed to attend spring training as he continues to deal with the fallout from an MLB gambling investigation and is facing criminal charges.
Cade Smith will continue to handle that role, as he did so well after Clase was banned last July. Hunter Gaddis returns as the prime setup man, and newcomers Shawn Armstrong, Colin Holderman, and Connor Brogdon could provide depth for manager Stephen Vogt to call on.
So, there is likely no need to rush Campbell into the big leagues, but it will be exciting to see him back on the mound, wherever that might be.
