Guardians Pitcher Ranks Among The AL’s Elite Since Debut

The Cleveland Guardians dropped a crucial divisional game against the Chicago White Sox on Saturday to set up a pivotal rubber match on Sunday that would drop Cleveland to four games back in the AL Central should they happen to come up short. To throw salt in the wound, the Guardians are at risk of falling to fourth place as the Detroit Tigers are moving on up as well.

As frustrating as these recent developments have been, one player who is tough to blame for any of it is rookie left-hander Parker Messick. The 25-year-old is having a tremendous breakout campaign and hasn’t given up more than two runs in any of his last six starts as he continues to laugh at the idea of running into a rookie wall.

Guardians Prospective shared that since Messick’s debut, only Cam Schlittler and Dylan Cease have more WAR among AL pitchers with 5.7 and 4.7, respectively, compared to Messick’s 4.5.

Messick wasn’t projected to be quite this dominant, but his emergence has been a pleasant surprise and has raised the ceiling of this rotation. He and Gavin Williams project to be one of the American League’s most intimidating 1-2 punches in a playoff series, that is, if the Guardians can stop slipping down the standings.

Messick dominated Game 1 of this White Sox series with seven innings of two-run ball to pick up the win. Williams mostly followed suit on Saturday, but the bullpen faltered to tie the series.

Throughout this swoon the Guardians have been on, the rotation has been quite steady. It’s the offense that hasn’t been pulling its weight, which has been an unfortunate trend dating back years.

Hopefully, the trade deadline acquisitions and promotion of Angel Genao can help light a fire under this group. Messick deserves to start Game 2 of a playoff series, but he’s going to need some help to get there.
