The Cleveland Guardians can’t seem to put together any extended runs of productive offense lately, which now has them in danger of slipping to fourth place in the AL Central, which would have been unfathomable just a month or two ago. Despite the additions at the deadline and the promotion of Angel Genao, the offense is still sputtering and is putting the whole season at risk.
The rotation is rounding into form and putting the team in a position to win just about every night, but the offense isn’t pulling its weight no matter which way you look at it. Every fan, media member, and insider knows it and the clock is ticking on the offense to start clicking.
Paul Hoynes of Cleveland.com sees the same issues as the rest of us. He recently wrote that the main reason the team has struggled since the break has been because the Guardians aren’t scoring any runs.
“They stopped scoring, the bullpen showed wear and tear, and their defense slipped a bit. Other than that, everything was just dandy,” Hoynes wrote.
The bullpen has had some hiccups, but has overall been solid, while Parker Messick, Gavin Williams, and Tanner Bibee are cooking in the rotation. With Joey Cantillo and the addition of Foster Griffin, it’s one of the deepest and most talented rotations in the AL and it’s a shame that the offense can’t give them more support.
It’s the type of rotation that can win a World Series, but the offense has scored three runs or fewer in ten of the team’s 21 games since the break. The Guardians haven’t even won consecutive games since July 20th and 21st and have lost 12 of the last 16 games.
Steven Kwan has been one of the hottest hitters in the league atop the order and Genao has seven hits in his first four games, but collectively, the runs aren’t going up on the board. Time is running out, and Sunday’s rubber match against the Chicago White Sox would be a great place to start the turnaround.
