Cleveland Guardians fans have been fortunate to watch a handful of their players take the big stage and perform in the World Baseball Classic thus far. Top prospect Travis Bazzana, tearing it up for Australia, has probably been the most intriguing development.
Another Guardian took center stage on Tuesday for Italy against the United States as reliever Matt Festa found himself on the mound late in the game. He did give up a run, but he and his fellow Italians were able to hold on and shock the USA 8-6 to move into first place in their pool at 3-0 and advance to the knockout round.
The icing on the cake is that Wednesday is Festa’s birthday, and what better way to celebrate than to have a chance to finish pool play undefeated with a game against Mexico on the schedule.
If Italy wins, the USA advances as well, so the whole country is wishing Festa a happy birthday and hoping he has another strong performance in him.
“Happy birthday to our guy, Matt Festa,” the Cleveland Guardians posted on X.

Festa turns 33 on Wednesday and is hopefully setting the stage for a great year in Cleveland. In his first year with the team in 2025, he posted a 4.12 ERA in a career-high 63 appearances out of the bullpen.
There are a lot of moving parts in Cleveland’s bullpen at the moment, and it will be exciting to see where Festa fits in. However, for the time being, he fits like a glove in Italy’s surprisingly strong bullpen.
He, Rod Marinaccio, and Greg Weissert finished off Team USA on Tuesday and will hope to continue their magical run against Mexico on Wednesday. If they win, Team USA advances to knockout play, but if Mexico wins and scores fewer than five runs, USA is out and will go down as perhaps the biggest disappointment in the history of this tournament.
These are exciting times to be a Guardians fan, and, at this rate, there could be someone on the team coming back to camp with a little hardware.
