Cleveland Guardians infielder Gabriel Arias had to leave Monday’s game against the Kansas City Royals with an injury to his hamstring. You could see right from the start that it wasn’t a day-to-day thing. The team carefully managed every bit of information about the situation.
On Tuesday, the Guardians made his move to the 15-day injured list official, with the diagnosis being a left hamstring strain. On Wednesday, the organization offered another update with Arias’ estimated timeline, and it wasn’t particularly encouraging.
“Guardians provided an update on Gabriel Arias after he got further evaluated. Expected to miss 4-8 weeks,” Guardians insider Tim Stebbins posted on X.

There appears to be a significant gap between the best and worst-case scenarios, but the reality is that soft tissue injuries are extremely complex. Bodies also heal at different speeds, and that’s something to consider as well.
In any case, Cleveland will be without the surging infielder for a while, potentially up to two months, but he could return sooner depending on how his recovery goes. The organization has already called up Juan Brito to take his place on the roster and in the infield picture.
Arias, who had a horrible start to his season, was actually starting to heat up when the injury happened. He was 3-for-6 with a double and two RBI in the two games right before the ailment, and hit home runs on Wednesday and Friday last week.
That’s more than the vast majority of his teammates, with just a couple of exceptions.
Arias is hitting .200/.250/.433 with four RBI and a 96 wRC+ in 2026, and was among the hottest hitters in the Guardians’ lineup. He is now set for a long spell on the shelf, while Brito gets the first shot at the second base position.
Travis Bazzana, Cleveland’s top prospect, should be called up at some point in May to take over the keystone, provided he is still producing at a high level in Triple-A. Arias hopes to get healthy in time to fight for his spot on the roster.
