The Cleveland Guardians were dealt an unfortunate development during Monday night’s game against the Kansas City Royals, and the organization wasted no time responding to it.
Gabriel Arias left the game in the fifth inning after suffering an apparent left leg injury while running out a double. For a player who had just delivered two clutch RBI in Sunday’s comeback win over the Cubs, the timing could not be much worse.
To fill the void, Cleveland made a move before the situation had a chance to linger. They are promoting infielder Juan Brito.
“Cleveland Guardians are promoting 24yr old switch hitting INF prospect Juan Brito from Triple A Columbus,” Guardians Prospective posted on X.

Brito is a 24-year-old infielder from Santo Domingo in the Dominican Republic who can play second base, third base, and shortstop, making him a natural fit to step in and cover whatever the Guardians need at the position. He stands 6’0 tall and bats from both sides of the plate, which gives manager Stephen Vogt some flexibility in the lineup.
The numbers Brito has put up in his time at Triple-A Columbus paint the picture of a hitter who has grown over the past two seasons. He posted a .256 average with a .821 OPS across 144 games there in 2024, and through nine games at Columbus to start 2026 he is hitting .314 with an .862 OPS.
Brito was optioned to Columbus on March 19 after spending time with the Guardians during spring training, where he hit .154 with a .582 OPS across 13 games. The spring numbers were not enough to crack the Opening Day roster, but the work he has put in since arriving back in Columbus has kept him in the conversation.
How long Arias is out will determine how big a role Brito plays in the immediate future. If the injury is minor and Arias returns quickly, this is a short audition. If it lingers, Brito has a genuine opportunity to show Cleveland what he can do on the biggest stage of his career so far.
Either way, the Guardians responded quickly.
