After getting roughed up by the Houston Astros on Monday night, the Cleveland Guardians needed a response. They got one in the best possible way on Tuesday, putting together a late-inning surge that turned what looked like another frustrating night into a satisfying 8-5 victory at Progressive Field.
The Guardians improved to 14-11 on the season while Houston dropped to 9-16, and the story of the game was a Cleveland offense that stayed patient, stayed the course, and then exploded when it counted most.

Cleveland got on the board early, scratching out single runs in the first and second innings to take a 2-0 lead. The game stayed relatively quiet through the middle frames as Houston chipped away and eventually took a 3-2 advantage heading into the late innings. Then the eighth inning happened, and everything changed.
The Guardians sent six runs across the plate in the eighth to blow the game open, turning a one-run deficit into a commanding lead they would not relinquish. It was exactly the kind of punch Cleveland needed after Monday’s loss.
Angel Martinez was one of the standouts on the night, going 2-4 with a run scored, an RBI, and a home run.

Chase DeLauter went 1-4 with three RBI, delivering a triple with the bases loaded in the eighth inning.

Jose Ramirez drew two walks and scored twice, doing what Ramirez does by finding ways to contribute even on nights when the hits do not come in bunches. Kyle Manzardo went 2-4 with two RBI, continuing a stretch of games where his bat has started to look more comfortable at the plate. Brayan Rocchio went 1-4 with an RBI, extending his productive run and keeping his hitting streak alive at eight games.
On the mound, Parker Messick gave the Guardians five innings of work, allowing three earned runs on six hits with four strikeouts and a walk. The final line was not his sharpest outing of the season given his 1.05 ERA coming in, but he kept Cleveland in the game and gave the bullpen a chance to take over.
Tuesday night was the kind of game that defines a good team’s season. They put together a crooked number when it mattered most and reminded everyone watching why this roster is capable of competing night in and night out.
The series with Houston continues on Wednesday, and Cleveland will look to take the series and carry that momentum forward.
