Not so long ago, during spring training, outfielder Petey Halpin was making a case to make the Cleveland Guardians’ Opening Day roster. He had an amazing showing in the Cactus League, hitting .267 with two home runs, three stolen bases, a .389 OBP, and a 139 wRC+ in 15 games.
The Guardians decided against bringing him with them, and he was assigned to Triple-A Columbus, where he had a sluggish start to his season. He has gotten hot, though, and his numbers are starting to pick up.
“Cleveland Guardians 23yr old OF prospect Petey Halpin extended his hitting streak to 13 straight games in game two of today’s doubleheader for Columbus on his 6th double of the season in the 3rd inning at Buffalo,” Guardians Prospective posted on X.

Halpin’s stats during the streak are amazing: he is slashing a robust .304/.391/411 with four doubles, a triple, eight walks, and a 120 wRC+. The home run power is yet to fully come, but he has the strength and talent to hit between 10 and 15 as a major leaguer if given the chance.
In fact, Halpin has two round-trippers and eight stolen bases for the year as a whole, which indicates that he has made baserunning and basestealing a priority. He has the speed to be a constant threat to steal 20-30 bases in the majors one day.
Halpin remains an interesting piece in the Guardians’ future outfield puzzle, but it’s also true that things are a bit crowded at the moment. With Daniel Schneemann, Angel Martinez, and Chase DeLauter all having nice seasons, Steven Kwan has been the least productive outfielder in Cleveland so far, believe it or not, and we all know he is due for a breakthrough at some point.
Halpin, who posted a 95 wRC+ in Columbus and a 157 mark in eight plate appearances in the majors last year, is currently sporting a 93 wRC+ in Triple-A. The arrow is definitely trending up, though.
He will need more sustained success if he wants to force the Guardians’ hand, though, because the current group of outfielders is deep and talented. Still, a 13-game hitting streak is impressive, no matter the level of competition.
