The Cleveland Guardians could use some punch on offense, to say the least.
However, they’re not likely to spend to sign a superstar.
That’s why they will most likely be tied to multiple mid-tier free agents this offseason.
With that in mind, they reportedly could be among the teams interested in Seattle Mariners second baseman Jorge Polanco.
“Polanco recovered from a down season by swinging harder and pulling the ball more frequently. That combination resulted in both the second-highest home-run tally and slugging percentage of his career. He’s lost a step over the years on account of aging and knee surgery, meaning he’s a substandard defensive second baseman. Polanco is also unlikely to repeat this year’s offensive output. Still, a team seeking above-average offense could do worse than him,” R.J. Anderson wrote.
Though chances are that Polanco won’t be as productive at the plate, and he’s not the best defender, the Guardians could use someone with power potential.
He might not be an everyday starter, as Cleveland is more than set at middle infield.
Then again, it could sign him to a short-term deal if the money makes sense.
Whatever the case, the Guardians need to improve their lineup.
The team has a foundation to build around, but it can’t expect that the young players will fix all of their woes overnight.
Third baseman Jose Ramirez is still in his prime and playing at an elite level.
As such, it’s time the Guardians finally surround him with the type of teammates he needs and deserves.
