The Cleveland Guardians need to make some moves this offseason.
They have a strong foundation to build around, anchored by Jose Ramirez.
However, that may not be enough to keep up with other AL powerhouses, which is why Cleveland could be very active in the trade market.
With that in mind, Kerry Miller of Bleacher Report proposed a three-team deal with the Baltimore Orioles and Houston Astros to bolster its outfield.
It would, however, cost them Steven Kwan.
Baltimore Orioles Receive: RHP Bryan Abreu (from HOU)
Houston Astros Receive: LF Steven Kwan (from CLE)
Cleveland Guardians Receive: OF Dylan Beavers (from BAL), OF Jacob Melton (from HOU) and RHP Spencer Arrighetti (from HOU)“Jacob Melton is one of their highest rated prospects who made his MLB debut this past summer. In 99 games played in the minors in 2023, he had 23 home runs and 46 stolen bases. Could be special if he ever manages to stay healthy. Same goes for Spencer Arrighetti, who missed all but seven starts in 2025. In August 2024, though, he racked up 47 strikeouts with a 1.95 ERA, quickly blossoming into what they hoped would be a key piece of the rotation this year. Combine Melton, Arrighetti and Beavers, and you’ve got a return for which Cleveland would perhaps at least consider moving its two-time All-Star,” Miller wrote.
Of course, losing a player of Kwan’s caliber would be a massive blow.
Then again, sometimes a team needs to take a step back to take a couple of steps forward.
The Guardians would acquire young players under club control, which is usually what they strive to do, and all of them could contribute right away.
Kwan was a trade candidate throughout this season, and the Guardians reportedly turned down offers from the San Diego Padres and other organizations.
The outfielder is under club control through 2027, but they haven’t been able to agree to a contract extension.
At this point, it feels like the parties aren’t close in those talks.
So, if the Guardians don’t like their chances of keeping Kwan long term, they might as well make the most of his trade value.
Whatever the case, they need to add firepower to their outfield somehow.
