The role was never going to be easy for Rhys Hoskins to accept.
A player with his track record, his career numbers, and his competitive makeup does not naturally gravitate toward a part-time situation. Hoskins has spent the better part of a decade as an everyday first baseman, a middle-of-the-order presence, and a guy who shows up in the lineup card every single night. What Cleveland is asking of him in 2026 looks different from that, and manager Stephen Vogt was honest about it when he addressed the topic after a recent game.
“Yeah it’s a different role for Rhys. It’s definitely taken some time to get used to it. And you know, I’m sure he’s not thrilled. You know, he wants to play every day, just like all of our guys want to play every day. But you know, Rhys has played a lot, and he’s got some huge hits for us. And you know, his veteran presence and his veteran at bat quality is really what we love about him. And such a tremendous teammate. He’s helping our young guys get better. Really, really fun to see him hit that homer tonight,” Vogt said.
Vogt is not pretending the situation is perfect. He acknowledged that Hoskins is not thrilled with his current role. Hoskins wants to be in the lineup every day.
But Vogt also made clear that what Hoskins brings to this roster goes beyond what shows up in the box score. He has 3,237 career at-bats. He has faced every kind of pitcher in every kind of situation. When he steps in against a tough left-hander late in a game with men on base, the experience he carries into that moment has genuine value for a roster that features as many young players as Cleveland’s does right now.
The part about helping young guys get better is equally important. Cleveland has made a habit of surrounding their developing players with veterans who understand their role within the larger picture of what the organization is building. Hoskins, whatever his personal frustrations might be, appears to be filling that role in the way the Guardians hoped he would when they brought him in.
The situation with Hoskins bears watching as the season progresses and the deadline approaches. But right now, Vogt made it clear that he values what the veteran first baseman brings to this clubhouse in ways that go well beyond what any stat line can measure.
