George Valera, who became a part of the Cleveland Guardians’ future after a nice showing down the stretch in 2025, was all set to enter 2026 as a starting outfielder with the team. Unfortunately, a left calf strain got in the way in mid-March and derailed everybody’s plans.
Valera couldn’t enjoy a normal spring training and opened the year on the injured list. He played a few rehab games in the minor leagues and was activated in mid-April.
Maybe the lack of spring training reps was too much to overcome, as he struggled right out of the gate and, on Thursday, got sent down to Triple-A Columbus.
“The Guardians have optioned George Valera to Triple-A Columbus. Will make the corresponding move on Friday,” team insider Tim Stebbins posted on X.

Spring training is increasingly important for players because it’s the perfect tune-up for the season. In this case, Valera couldn’t properly prepare and was out of rhythm during his time with the Guardians.
This roster decision will give him a chance to get himself up to speed in a competitive environment and, potentially, earn himself another shot soon should an opening appear.
The sweet-swinging lefty was slashing a disappointing .216/.237/.297 with no home runs and a 46 wRC+ in 13 games and 38 plate appearances. The struggling Guardians are trying to come up with any way to give their offense a spark, and Valera paid the price on Thursday.
His 2.6 percent walk rate was particularly disappointing. It’s hard to argue that he was a liability at the moment, but he is talented enough to put himself on the map in no time.
Cleveland didn’t immediately announce who will replace Valera on the roster, but CJ Kayfus, Petey Halpin, and Stuart Fairchild are all natural replacements. All of them are playing well in Columbus, but Fairchild is sporting an impressive 161 wRC+ in 96 trips to the plate and, as a right-handed hitter, could be a fixture against lefties if called up.
As for Valera, he will immediately report to Columbus and try to find his way to the majors again. Chances are, he eventually will.
