The Cleveland Guardians are virtually a lock to open the season with Tanner Bibee, Gavin Williams, and Luis L. Ortiz in their rotation.
The remaining two spots are a mystery.
There is no shortage of options for Cleveland to choose from: Triston McKenzie, Ben Lively, Logan Allen, Doug Nikhazy, Vince Velazquez, Kolby Allard, Jakob Junis, Slade Cecconi, Joey Cantillo, and more.
Some of them are enjoying nice camps, like Allen, Nikhazy, and Allard.
Others, like Cecconi and McKenzie, have lots of question marks surrounding them.
Right now, Allen is looking like the pitcher most deserving of a roster spot among those options.
After Sunday’s 1-0 win against the Chicago White Sox, everybody talked about Gavin Williams’ fantastic start, and deservedly so.
He was brilliant.
But Allen’s three scoreless frames in relief to close out the game were somewhat overlooked.
“Cleveland #Guardians LHP Logan Allen tossed three more scoreless innings today against the White Sox lowering his spring ERA to 0.84 over 10.2 innings pitched. Line – 3.0(IP) 2H 0R 0ER 0BB 3SO (49 Pitches 29 Strikes). Spring numbers: 10.2(IP) 6H 1R 1ER 2BB 10SO 0.84 ERA,” Guardians Prospective posted on X.

It was an amazing performance by the left-hander, who is currently in position to take one of the remaining rotation spots in Cleveland.
He has a sub-1.00 ERA in 10.2 innings so far (0.84) and is striking out almost a batter per inning.
Granted, spring training stats should be taken with a grain of salt, but they are not entirely meaningless.
At this point, Allen is resembling the pitcher he was in 2023 (3.81 ERA as a rookie) and not the one he was last year (5.73 ERA and a demotion to Triple-A.)
That should be enough to secure a spot in the Guardians’ staff.
