The Cleveland Guardians’ offense can explode in any given game, but it is a below-average unit—most numbers, stats, and metrics back that up. The situation has worsened in the last few days after three of their best offensive players, Jose Ramirez, Angel Martinez, and Chase DeLauter, recently hit the injured list with different fractures.
The Guardians have some hitters they could call up from Triple-A, and they could help, such as Cooper Ingle and Ralphy Velazquez, but trusting the fate of their season on rookies wouldn’t be fair to them. What they need is reliable production, and that’s not easy to acquire.
Still, according to reporter Andre Knott, the team is trying to get some difference-makers before the August 3 deadline.
“We don’t need another young hitter. We need a veteran who knows the hell he’s doing. We need a guy that can sit in the middle of the lineup and can carry you. They’re looking. It’s hell right now to make that type of trade before the 4th (of August). It’s tough, but at the same time, they’re looking,” Knott said.

The Guardians have one of the most exciting collections of young talent in the American League, with Brayan Rocchio and Angel Martinez breaking out, Chase DeLauter playing well before his injury, and Travis Bazzana taking over as one of the junior circuit’s best second basemen.
Additionally, they have young slugger Kyle Manzardo coming into his own after a rough start to the season. Ingle and Velazquez are a call away, too.
What the Guardians need is a proven masher in the middle of the lineup, someone who can put above-average offensive and power numbers in his sleep. Someone who can come over and produce right away, even if he doesn’t have a lot of team control.
Cleveland, as Knott notes, already has talented young players. Now, they need a veteran masher or two who can be counted to hit home runs and have decent contact and on-base skills.
Basically, what the Guardians should be seeking are offensive upgrades over some of their outfielders and perhaps over Rhys Hoskins, who is sporting a 91 wRC+. Will they be open to moving some prospects to find the right guy?
