The Cleveland Guardians recently demoted shortstop Brayan Rocchio to Triple-A.
Handed the position before the 2024 season, Rocchio went on to post a 79 wRC+ and a 27 mark in the first few weeks of 2025 before being optioned.
He was a Gold Glove finalist last year, but his bat is very, very far behind his glove.
Guardians Prospective has been very familiar with Rocchio’s game and progress ever since he was a prospect.
It’s now letting fans know that a player considered to have similar skills, Gabriel Arias, also struggled at a similar stage and was demoted, only to come back stronger a year later.
“Let’s not forget the Guardians sent current shortstop Gabriel Arias down to Triple-A during his age 24 season for a wake-up call,” it wrote on X.

Let's hope that Rocchio's demotion during his age 24 season is a kick in the ass he may have needed. https://t.co/nbFifX3pF9

Even if they are somewhat similar in multiple aspects, these are completely different players.
Arias is far more talented with the bat, while Rocchio is a better defender.
After posting a 70 wRC+ mark in the first few months last year, Arias was sent down, and it was a wake-up call for him.
He went on to post a 132 wRC+ in Triple-A and succeeded in the Winter League.
Right now, he looks like a decent MLB hitter with a 105 wRC+, eight doubles and four home runs.
It took a lot of work for Arias to be where he is.
Rocchio has fewer offensive resources, but the hope is that the demotion lights a fire in him.
