Guardians Have Closed The Gap In The AL Central Race

Cleveland’s win Friday night in Minneapolis did more than just keep the Guardians afloat in the standings. It pulled them right back into striking distance of first place in the American League Central, a spot that looked a lot further away just a few weeks ago. Sitting at 75 wins and 73 losses, the Guardians now trail the White Sox by only half a game in the division, with Chicago’s own recent stumbles opening the door for Cleveland to make a real run at the top spot down the stretch.

The Central race has tightened considerably, with Minnesota sitting six games back and both Detroit and Kansas City effectively out of the picture at this point. That leaves the division essentially a two team race between Cleveland and Chicago over the final stretch of the season, and with the Guardians hosting the White Sox in a three game series at Progressive Field beginning Monday, the two clubs are about to get a direct chance to settle the matter on the field. A strong showing in that series could flip the standings in Cleveland’s favor before the week is even over.

The Wild Card picture looks even more comfortable for the Guardians right now. Cleveland holds a two game cushion over Toronto for the third and final playoff spot, with Texas sitting two and a half games back and Baltimore trailing by three. That gives the Guardians two realistic paths into October, a division title or a Wild Card berth, and the flexibility that comes with controlling both races is not something every contender gets to enjoy this late in September.

With fourteen games left to play, the Guardians control plenty of their own destiny in both races. A strong week against Chicago would go a long way toward settling the division question outright, while continuing to hold serve against the rest of the Wild Card field keeps Cleveland’s backup plan firmly in place. Either way, the gap that once felt like a real obstacle has shrunk into something the Guardians can realistically close before October arrives.
