It has been a strange week or so for the Cleveland Guardians on and off the field, and looking every bit like the .500 team their record paints them to be, it might be time to start looking toward the future.
This season isn’t going according to plan, but the farm system has taken some exciting steps forward, particularly when it comes to one new player.
The Guardians all but confirmed that they are selling at the trade deadline when they sent former Cy Young winner Shane Bieber to the Toronto Blue Jays.
In return, they got 22-year-old right-hander Khal Stephen, who now becomes Cleveland’s top-ranked pitching prospect, via Tim Stebbins at MLB.com.

Stephen was one of Toronto’s top prospects and features a five-pitch mix that has allowed him to post an impressive 2.06 ERA in 91.2 innings across three levels of the minors this season.
He has made it to Double-A, so he shouldn’t be too far away from reaching the majors, making this a nice return for Bieber, who pitched in two games last year and hasn’t appeared in an MLB game this season while recovering from Tommy John surgery.
With Cleveland’s season slipping away, Bieber was an ideal player to move, especially given the fact that he has a player option and could become a free agent at season’s end.
