The Cleveland Guardians have one of the best farm systems in baseball, with a lot of that talent acquired through the MLB Draft. Looking back over the past few years, it’s easy to find some success stories and other players who didn’t quite work out.
Pitching prospect Daniel Espino lands somewhere in the middle. A first-round pick in the 2019 MLB Draft, he has had great success when he’s been able to play, but injuries have derailed his career to this point.
Bleacher Report recently looked back and graded every team’s 2019 draft six years later, and it gave the Guardians a C.
“Daniel Espino was one of the top pitching prospects in baseball following a 2021 season where he logged a 3.73 ERA and 152 strikeouts in 91.2 innings. However, injuries have limited him to 23.2 total innings in the four years since that standout performance, and he enters 2026 trying to get his career back on track. The Guardians have done a terrific job finding under-the-radar pitching talent on Day 2 and Day 3 of the draft, and this class is no exception as Hunter Gaddis has been a terrific setup man in Cleveland, while Matt Waldron (Padres) and Kevin Kelly (Rays) have both found success elsewhere,” Joel Reuter wrote.
Espino has suffered a knee injury and multiple shoulder injuries, and he missed the entire 2023 and 2024 seasons. After pitching one game for Triple-A Columbus late in the 2025 season, he showed good form in the Arizona Fall League as he works his way toward making his long-awaited MLB debut.
Known as a hard-throwing right-hander, he does have 222 strikeouts in his 134.1 innings to date in the minors. He also is just 24 years old, which means he still has some time to begin a lengthy career.
Gaddis was a fifth-round pick, and he has made 164 appearances since his debut in the 2022 season. He has become a fixture in the Cleveland bullpen over the past two seasons.
As for the other players mentioned from the Guardians’ 2019 draft, Waldron has made 33 starts over three seasons with the San Diego Padres, and Kelly has appeared in 166 games as a reliever for the Tampa Bay Rays.
Hopefully, Espino will be able to continue his recovery and can join them in the major leagues in the not-too-distant future.
