The Cleveland Guardians went into the 2026 season counting on a number of young outfielders taking a big step forward to help improve what was at times an anemic offense in 2025. Chase DeLauter and Angel Martinez have taken that step, while others will unfortunately have to wait until next season to take another bite at the apple.
One of those youngsters who wasn’t able to take that step in 2026 is CJ Kayfus, who broke camp with the Guardians to open the season before being sent down in mid-April after hitting just .182 over nine games. He was working tirelessly in Triple-A Columbus to make it back to the show, but after a rough injury suffered on July 12th, he will have to wait until Spring Training in 2027 to try to get back to the big leagues.
Guardians Prospective shared that Kayfus underwent ankle surgery today to fix the broken right ankle he suffered a few days ago. He is officially out for the season but expected to make a full recovery ahead of next season.
“Cleveland #Guardians have announced that CJ Kayfus underwent surgery today on a broken right ankle. Kayfus also suffered a ligament injury. He will miss the rest of the 2026 season,” Guardians Prospective wrote.

Kayfus was injured on an awkward late slide heading into second base. It immediately looked bad as he went down, and he also suffered a ligament injury in the process, but it’s encouraging that he was able to have the surgery pretty much right away and get started on his road to recovery.
You never want to see this happen to anybody, but it’s always tough to see it from a prospect fighting hard to get back to the big leagues. It’s a huge setback, but not an injury that should linger into the future and affect his production long term.
Kayfus will be heard from again, and we already can’t wait to see what he is able to bring to camp next preseason. He is still one of the biggest prospects in this organization, and it will take a lot more than a broken ankle to change that.
