After wrapping up the 2025 campaign on a high note with the Cleveland Guardians, outfielder George Valera was set to enter 2026 with a major role on offense as a part-time corner outfielder and/or designated hitter. He was set to have plenty of at-bats, and he certainly earned them with a 112 wRC+ in a brief 16-game cameo in the majors and a 144 wRC+ in the minor leagues last year.
Unfortunately, a calf injury forced him to open the 2026 campaign on the injured list, though. He didn’t make his debut this year until mid-April, and a 46 wRC+ through his first 13 games forced the team to option him to Triple-A and give other players, such as Angel Martinez, an extended look.
Martinez, Steven Kwan, and Chase DeLauter ran away with the outfield spots, and the Guardians also featured guys with speed and better defense ahead of Valera throughout the season, such as Petey Halpin or Khalil Watson. We haven’t seen the power hitter in the majors since April, but he is sure trying to remind the world that he can still be an impact hitter with an insane run of games.

For the season, Valera has a strong .272/.365/.466 line with 12 home runs and a 119 wRC+ in 77 games in Columbus. In his last 21, however, he has looked like the guy who earned a late-season call-up to Cleveland last year and did very well.
If we expand the sample to what Valera has done since July 28, excluding Saturday’s game, the numbers get even more impressive. Since that date, the slugger is slashing a mind-blowing .403/.483/.844 with 10 doubles, eight round-trippers, a 1.327 OPS, and a 236 wRC+. Basically, he has been a beast all summer.
Don’t sleep on Valera’s potential to help the Guardians again at some point. Some, like Guardians Prospective, even say that he should be on the 40-man roster instead of Rhys Hoskins or Blake Perkins.
Still only 25, can we please put him back on the 40-man instead of Rhys Hoskins or Blake Perkins before we lose him to free agency for nothing after the season.

Still just 25, Valera is entering his physical prime. All he wants is a chance, and he is slowly doing enough to earn one.
