The Cleveland Guardians clearly believe in the talent of their prospects, evidenced by the lack of offseason acquisitions to improve their low-ranked offense. Four of those young players will be counted on to fill bigger roles in the lineup this season, starting as soon as Opening Day.
Another prospect, who is unlikely to start the season in the majors, could turn out to be the best of them all. Ralphy Velazquez is just 20 years old, but he has shown the attributes of a future All-Star.
Guardians general manager Mike Chernoff recently raved about the young slugger’s “rare” traits, praising Velazquez’s plate discipline and raw power.
“Ralphy has a combination of great swing decisions and tremendous power,” Chernoff said. “That’s rare.”
Velazquez did receive a non-roster invitation to spring training, which means there is the chance that the versatile first baseman/outfielder could make the team. However, it’s more likely that the organization wants him to get some valuable experience in the major league camp to help with his overall development.
As it stands, Velazquez ended 2025 as the Guardians’ No. 9 prospect after a strong stint at Double-A. In 28 games for Akron, he batted .330 with an OPS of .994. That was after he hit 17 home runs in 94 games at Single-A.
Cleveland’s top two prospects, outfielder Chase DeLauter and second baseman Travis Bazzana, are set to make their MLB regular-season debuts this season, with DeLauter a potential Rookie of the Year candidate. With fellow rookies C.J. Kayfus at DH and George Valera in the outfield, and returning power hitter Kyle Manzardo at first base, there would likely be few at-bats remaining for Velazquez at this point.
Granted, any addition of power would certainly help the Guardians, but they have always shown patience with their prospects, and that strategy tends to work out more often than not. With veterans Jose Ramirez and Steven Kwan still producing at an All-Star level, the lineup should remain solid throughout the season.
So, fans can follow Velazquez’s progress in the minors and eagerly await his eventual arrival in the big leagues.
