The Cleveland Guardians have claimed the American League Central title in back-to-back seasons, but significant roster upgrades remain necessary before the organization can be viewed as a legitimate World Series contender in 2026.
Cleveland has historically avoided major external acquisitions, choosing instead to develop talent internally and address needs through its farm system. That approach may shift this offseason as the front office explores outside options to strengthen at least one area of the roster.
Guardians President of Baseball Operations Chris Antonetti spoke with MLB.com reporter Jordan Bastian during the league’s GM meetings and confirmed the team’s intention to add outfield depth from outside the organization.
“We have a number of options, young players, that we’d like to give opportunities to,” Antonetti said of the Guardians’ outfield. “But if there is that right external acquisition that we think makes sense for us, we’ll pursue it.”
Cleveland’s offense ranked among the weakest in baseball last season despite the bullpen posting a 3.44 ERA, the third-best mark in MLB. The organization has consistently developed contact-oriented hitters but has struggled to produce power at the plate.
Former Guardians have gone on to hit for significant power with other teams, making the acquisition of a power bat a likely priority this winter. The bullpen faces notable losses heading into 2026.
Jakob Junis and Kolby Allard have entered free agency while Nic Enright will miss the entire season recovering from Tommy John surgery. Paul Sewald was traded to the Detroit Tigers after an unsuccessful stretch in Cleveland, and Trevor Stephan has not returned to form following elbow surgery.
The situation at closer has also become uncertain. Emmanuel Clase was officially arraigned by the FBI on Thursday following an indictment announcement made Sunday.
Given these developments, Cleveland may need to pursue additional bullpen depth this offseason. Adding a veteran presence could provide stability to a relatively young group of relievers as the Guardians look to build a championship-caliber roster.
