For years, fans have been quite critical of the Cleveland Guardians’ front office.
Despite great success in developing players, its reluctance to spend money has held the team back.
Now, it seems like one of its executives is about to join a new team.
According to MLB insider Brittany Ghiroli, the Guardians could lose assistant general manager Matt Forman to the Colorado Rockies.
“When longtime Colorado Rockies executive Bill Schmidt stepped down as general manager earlier this month, the team stated in a press release that the search for his replacement would be focused outside of the organization. Thus far, the Rockies have been true to their word. The team has interviewed at least three candidates to be their next head of baseball operations: Toronto Blue Jays executive and former Houston Astros general manager James Click, Kansas City Royals assistant GM Scott Sharp and Cleveland Guardians assistant GM Matt Forman,” Ghiroli wrote.
It’s not that Cleveland’s decision-makers have deliberately decided not to spend big money on free agents.
That is likely a direct order from the owners, and that’s likely to remain the case for as long as the Dolan family is in charge.
However, the Guardians could change hands soon, as David Blitzer is expected to take over the ownership group at some point.
Hopefully, that will lead to a greater willingness to spend some money to keep up with bigger-market teams.
Granted, the Guardians are never going to be able to compete with the likes of the Los Angeles Dodgers or New York Yankees, especially when it comes to signing the biggest names in the game.
But it’s not like they need to offer multiple $400 million deals or go after Shohei Ohtani and Juan Soto.
They just need to make a couple of wise investments to surround Jose Ramirez with the type of supporting cast he wants and needs to get this team to the World Series.
