The Cleveland Guardians made a notable roster decision as spring training winds down, and it has put one familiar name back in the spotlight. While the move creates uncertainty around his immediate future, manager Stephen Vogt made it clear the organization is not giving up on Nolan Jones just yet.
Cleveland outrighted Jones to Triple-A Columbus, a move that removes him from the 40-man roster and forces a decision about what comes next. It is a significant development for a player who once showed flashes of being a key contributor, but has struggled to find consistency over the past two seasons.
“We continue to believe that Nolan can be an impact player in this league, and it’s just unfortunately not going to be on Opening Day with us,” Vogt said. “But we’re all hopeful that Nolan remains with us in the organization and gets back to his old form. Because what we’ve seen from Nolan in stretches is somebody who can impact our team, both in the field and at the plate.”
Jones now faces a decision that will shape the next phase of his career. Because of his service time, he has the ability to reject the assignment and explore other opportunities.
Over the past two seasons, Jones has posted a .618 OPS across 215 games, a far cry from the production Cleveland needs from a corner outfielder. Those struggles have carried into spring training, where competition for roster spots has been intense and unforgiving.
He showed that potential early in his career, where he flashed power and offensive impact that made him an intriguing piece when Cleveland brought him back. That version of Jones is still what the organization is holding onto.
The Guardians are not closing the door. They are leaving it open, even if just slightly, for Jones to work his way back into the picture.
Now, the pressure shifts back to Jones.
If he remains in the organization, Triple A will become his proving ground. It will be his opportunity to show that those flashes can turn into something more consistent, something the Guardians can rely on.
Because right now, the belief is still there.
The question is whether the performance will follow.
