For much of the past two seasons, Bo Naylor’s bat felt like a locked door the Guardians kept knocking on, waiting for it to finally open. There were flashes, but nothing that stuck long enough to quiet the doubts. Now, heading into 2026, that door might finally be cracking open in a meaningful way.
Late last season, something changed. Naylor did not just get hot. He looked like a completely different hitter.
Mike Petriello noted this change and named Naylor as a player who could breakout this season.
“He hit .290 with a .548 slugging percentage in September, then homered in Cleveland’s Wild Card Series loss to Detroit,” Petriello wrote. “A month’s worth of good play does not outweigh two seasons worth of poor play. That said, we wanted to find real changes, and Naylor gave us a good one. His bat is faster, and his stance is totally different.”
Petriello went on to describe the change in more detail.
“His stance widened by an entire foot. His setup, previously one of the most open in the sport, became far more neutral. Naylor swapped out a leg kick for a toe tap, too. If he looked like a different hitter when he was hitting better… well, that’s because he was.”
For Naylor, the biggest issue had never been talent. It was consistency. His approach at the plate often looked out of sync.
The Guardians have been waiting for this version of Naylor. A catcher who can provide even steady offense, let alone flashes of power, changes the shape of the lineup.

Still, there is skepticism.
One strong month does not erase what came before it. Pitchers will adjust. The league will test whether these changes hold up over time.
But this feels different.
He rebuilt parts of his swing, and the results followed. That gives the Guardians something they have not had before when it comes to him, a reason to believe the improvement might actually stick.
Now, the question is simple.
Was September the beginning of something new, or just a brief spark in a long stretch of inconsistency?
The answer to that question could end up being one of the most important storylines for the Guardians in 2026.
