The Cleveland Guardians have always done well at finding and developing talent. They’re usually quite patient with the players they develop, sometimes to a fault.
With that in mind, the front office might want to keep a close eye on Jaison Chourio. The young centerfielder has been lighting it up in Venezuela’s winter league, and he may have played his way into some consideration for a call-up next season.
As pointed out by Guardians Prospective on X, he’s been one of the hottest hitters in the Caribbean nation’s LVBP:
“Cleveland Guardians 20yr old switch-hitting CF prospect Jaison Chourio extends his on-base streak to 19 straight games with an RBI base hit to left field in the 3rd inning tonight for his LVBP club Aguilas vs the Cardenales. Chourio is currently hitting .315 on the season with a .837 OPS,” Guardians Prospective posted on X.
The Guardians have a big need for big bats in the outfield. Chourio isn’t the most proficient prospect in their farm system, but he can certainly bring some juice to the offense.
Of course, he still has some major hurdles to clear in his development. The Guardians have been patient with him, and it looks like that approach is working like a charm.
This team is never going to be the one to spend big bucks in free agency. They know they can’t compete with the biggest markets, so they’re not even going to try. That being said, they excel at developing their prospects, and Chourio could be the latest example of success.
The Guardians have never shied away from trusting their young players. Manager Stephen Vogt will always rely on them and give them an opportunity to prove their worth.
That approach comes with plenty of risks, but if he continues to play this way, maybe Chourio will be the next player on that list.
