The Cleveland Guardians are looking to get better. However, sometimes, you have to take a step back to take a couple of steps forward. In this particular case, it means potentially moving on from one of their best players. With all the chatter around Steven Kwan, it’s starting to sound like he’s not going to be there for much longer.
And with the winter meetings already underway, MLB insider Mark Feinsand believes he’s a strong trade candidate right now:
“Other players with multiple years of control who could be moved include Brendan Donovan of the Cardinals, Steven Kwan of the Guardians, Edward Cabrera of the Marlins and Jarren Duran of the Red Sox,” Feinsand wrote.
The Guardians have unsuccessfully tried to get Kwan to sign a contract extension for months now. The fact that they held onto him last season despite having multiple trade offers for his services was encouraging at the time, but it doesn’t seem like there has been much progress – if any – regarding his extension.
If the Guardians are unwilling or unable to meet his financial aspirations, they might as well get as much as they can in return for his services. He’s earned a big payday, and while he’s still under contract for two more years, it’s hard to believe he’ll gladly stay in Cleveland unless he gets one.
The Toronto Blue Jays, San Diego Padres, and Los Angeles Dodgers were reportedly quite active in trade talks trying to acquire him, but to no avail. Now, they should resume their pursuit. The fans will obviously hate to watch him leave.
At least, they can rest assured that whoever gets him will have to pay a steep price to acquire his services.
