The Cleveland Guardians have bounced back from a four-game losing skid earlier in the week to win the past two and get back above .500. The offense finally had a strong day in Friday’s 8-5 win in the series opener at the Athletics, which ended a stretch of five consecutive games scoring three runs or fewer.
The offensive draught convinced the front office to finally pull the trigger and call up top prospect Travis Bazzana to take over at second base and provide some much-needed thump. He hasn’t done that just yet, but he did draw a pair of walks and score two runs in Friday’s win.
Bruce Drennan is all in on the former No. 1 pick as well. During a recent episode of Bonus Time, Drennan had plenty of praise for Cleveland’s new second baseman and said he believes he’ll be a “tremendous addition.”
“There is a huge difference between the minor leagues and when you get to the big leagues. This will be the adjustment for Travis Bazzana, but he has all the attributes to be a tremendous addition,” said Drennan.

Drennan also pointed out how well Bazzana did in the World Baseball Classic for Australia, which was a great setting for him to get his feet wet against elevated competition. He may not have his first hit yet, but nine at bats is a meaningless sample size and he has been having good trips to the plate as evidenced by his four walks.
Even though Bazzana has all the ability in the world, it’s wise that manager Stephen Vogt isn’t putting him in a situation where he feels as if he has to save the franchise. This team has already won consecutive AL Central crowns and is off to a decent enough start this year, so Bazzana coming in and batting seventh until he finds his footing is a great way to ease him into the bigs.
Guardians fans will enjoy getting to know more and more about their future superstar over the coming weeks and months, and there is no doubt he has the personality to endear himself to this fan base. The top prospect is here, and let’s hope he gets hot soon and leaves no question about whether or not he is ready for the show.
