The Cleveland Guardians are about to lose one of their key coaches.
Stephen Vogt will have to find himself a new assistant hitting coach.
According to a report by Kendall Rogers of D-1 baseball, the Vanderbilt Commodores are expected to hire former infielder Jason Esposito to be their new hitting coach.
SCOOP: @VandyBoys is expected to hire former standout player Jason Esposito as its new hitting coach, I'm told. Esposito, a former Vanderbilt alumnus, will replace hitting coach Jayson King.
He’s been the Guardian’s assistant hitting coach for the past three years, and he’s been with the Guardians for the past eight years.
Esposito played for Tim Corbin for three years, and he made 196 starts for the Commodores before the Baltimore Orioles took him in the second round of the 2011 MLB Draft.
With him at the helm, the Commodores made it to Omaha and went 54-12 in his final campaign.
He slashed .369/.420/.577 with 28 runs, 26 RBI, and four home runs that season.
Long gone are the days of the Commodores excelling on offense.
They’ve finished in the bottom five of the conference in runs scored per game in four consecutive seasons, and they’ve failed to get past the regional round.
Of course, it’s not like the Guardians have fared much better, as they ranked No. 22 in offense last season, but still, bringing in someone with this kind of experience should help.
Esposito will be the team’s third hitting coach in as many seasons, and he will have his work cut out for him to turn things around.
As for the Guardians, it’ll be interesting to see who gets the nod to replace him.
