The Cleveland Guardians will never be the type of team that gives up valuable prospects to get a star. They won’t engage in bidding wars or try to break the bank to land high-end free agents, knowing that they won’t be able to outbid the biggest markets.
That being said, that doesn’t mean they’re not going to try to improve the team. They will make some marginal moves and hope that their farm system continues helping them compete at the highest level. With that in mind, they’re reportedly keeping tabs on the St. Louis Cardinals.
According to MLB Live, both clubs have been engaged in trade talks, although they didn’t specify for which players.
“The Cardinals and Guardians talks have picked up recently – and it seems to coincide with when the teams and names leaked with Seattle and San Francisco. The Cardinals assistant GM Rob Cerfolio came from Cleveland – so he could have a wealth of knowledge on their players if talks go deep. As Chaim likes to grab players he’s familiar with – I’m sure the same thing can be said for the new Assistant GM,” MLB Live posted on X.
Of course, fans might speculate about Brendan Donovan. Unfortunately, he seems to be the team’s most valuable trade chip right now, and it’s hard to believe the Guardians will be willing to meet the Cardinals’ asking price for his services.
The front office’s approach to building this roster hasn’t been the flashiest or most exciting, and they’ve made their fair share of mistakes, both with the players they’ve pursued and the ones they haven’t gone after. That being said, they should also get the benefit of the doubt. This team isn’t that far behind in terms of World Series contention.
Hopefully, the team will make the moves they need to make, and the young players, such as C.J. Kayfus, George Valera, and Chase DeLauter, will break out next season with more experience under their belts.
