The Cleveland Guardians will be without top reliever Emmanuel Clase until August 31, at the very least, as he is currently under investigation for irregularities involving sports betting.
That development also prevents them from trading Clase, which was initially their objective entering the week.
Clase was placed on non-disciplinary paid leave, at least until MLB reveals the results of its investigation and the player is sanctioned in case he gets any kind of disciplinary measure.
As a result, the Guardians needed to replace Clase on the roster, and they announced the corresponding move on Monday afternoon.

Tim Herrin, one of the stars of the 2024 Guardians’ bullpen, is rejoining the team after being optioned to Triple-A on July 9.
Herrin, the owner of a 3.99 ERA in 37 appearances before being sent down, made some strides during his time in Columbus.
The Guardians didn’t say it, but they optioned him because he had developed a control problem.
He gave away 22 free passes in 29.1 innings for Cleveland earlier in the year, before his demotion, against 28 strikeouts.
In Columbus, Herrin didn’t issue any walks in four innings, but did allow a couple of earned runs for a 4.50 ERA in four frames.
The Guardians are hoping that Herrin can recapture his 2024 form, as he posted a brilliant 1.92 ERA in 65.2 innings last year at the MLB level.
He walked 25 and struck out 68 last season, showing incredible control of the strike zone and command of his pitches.
If Stephen Vogt, Carl Willis, and the rest of the Guardians coaching staff can help Herrin bounce back to last year’s levels, they might not miss Clase that much for as long as he is gone.
It’s a tall task, but there is plenty of talent on Herrin’s left arm.
