The first four rounds of the MLB Draft took place on Saturday afternoon and the Cleveland Guardians had one pick in each round. They kicked things off by selecting two big pitchers in the first two rounds, landing 6’5″ righty Liam Peterson out of Florida with the 19th pick and 6’4″ lefty Logan Schmidt out of Ganesha High School in California.
Both selections were taken around the spots on the board that most projected them to go, which was a trend the Guardians maintained over the third and fourth rounds as well. That approach should bode well for the Guardians being able to sign all their picks, including their third-rounder who could bring an exciting dynamic to the organization.
In the third round, the Guardians took outfielder Tre Broussard out of Houston with the 95th pick. He was 56 for 64 on his stolen base attempts in two years at Houston and hit an impressive .344 last season.
“With their 3rd-round pick (No. 95 overall), the @CleGuardians select @UHCougarBB outfielder Tre Broussard, No. 91 on the Top 250 Draft prospects list,” MLB Draft posted.

Guardians fans were hoping for a bit more out of their young outfielders this season as it seemed like a number of them were ready to blossom in Cleveland, but aside from Chase DeLauter and the injured Angel Martinez, the young outfield prospects have largely disappointed. You never go into a draft trying to fill holes on the major league roster, but Broussard fits the kind of profile this organization often looks for from its outfielders and it’s tough not to make the comparisons to Steven Kwan.
Kwan’s bat and base-stealing have fallen off a cliff this season, so it’s not impossible that it at least crossed the front office’s mind that Broussard could potentially be his successor in a few years if he is unable to turn things around. It’s a tough pill to swallow, but this team needs more production wherever it can find it and if Kwan isn’t providing it, his seat could heat up soon.
You can never have enough speed, and hopefully the Guardians can get Broussard signed as soon as possible to begin the process of developing him into a future star. It’s an exciting day for all involved, and we already can’t wait to see his speed on the field.
