Sunday’s comeback victory over Seattle was not just a feel good moment for Cleveland, it was a genuine departure from how this team has performed in similar situations for most of the season. The Guardians had spent the year struggling mightily whenever they fell behind late, making the five-run eighth inning rally all the more significant in the context of just how rarely this group has found a way to come back. Joe Noga of cleveland.com put the achievement into perspective by looking at exactly how uncommon Sunday’s outcome really was.
“The comeback was a rare one for Cleveland. The Guardians entered the day just 2 and 33 when trailing after seven innings and had not won a game after trailing by three or more runs after seven innings since May 3, 2025 in Toronto. It was just their third victory this season when trailing after seven innings and their first series win since taking two of three from Detroit on June 12 and 13,” Noga wrote.
That 2-33 record entering Sunday speaks to just how difficult this season has been whenever Cleveland found itself on the wrong side of the scoreboard in the later innings. The Guardians had managed only sporadic success clawing back from late deficits, making the late-inning rally against Seattle’s bullpen on Sunday a notable break from form. Patrick Bailey’s sacrifice bunt and Steven Kwan’s walk to load the bases set the stage perfectly, and Chase DeLauter delivering the tying hit in his first game back from a fractured rib only added to how unlikely the sequence of events truly was.
The series win itself carried similar rarity, marking Cleveland’s first series victory since taking two of three from Detroit nearly two weeks earlier. That stretch without a series win came during one of the more turbulent runs of the season, one that included the club losing Jose Ramirez, Angel Martinez and DeLauter to injury within the same week.
Cleveland will look to carry this momentum forward as it continues the homestand.
