The Cleveland Guardians couldn’t keep the momentum going on Wednesday night.
They dropped a 9-1 decision to the Baltimore Orioles at Camden Yards, and while Gavin Williams was mostly solid, the few mistakes he made wound up costing the team the game.
First, he allowed a Grand Slam when he threw a slider to Jackson Holliday right down the middle.
The O’s gained a 4-0 lead, and it was all downfield after that.
Following the defeat, Williams told the media that he failed at trying to hit the corners a little too much.
Then again, it wasn’t all negative.
Despite the loss, he was happy that he was able to pitch into the seventh inning.
After the game, Williams admitted that going deep into games was a major expectation and point of emphasis for him this season:
“That’s one of the main things I want this year is to go deep in games,” Williams said. “I didn’t do that a lot last year, so hopefully it’s going to be like that a lot more this year.”
Manager Stephen Vogt expressed some concerns about Williams’ command, but he claimed to be satisfied with his overall performance during the setback.
Williams is now 1-1 with a 4.58 ERA, 1.32 WHIP, and 18 strikeouts for the season, and he was trending in the right direction before this outing.
The Guardians will take the field to wrap up the three-game series after splitting the first two games.
Right-hander Tanner Bibee (1-1, 4.40) will take the mound for the visitors, while the Orioles will send fellow righty Tomoyuki Sugano (1-1, 3.86).
The Guardians are 9-8 for the season and in second place in the American League Central Division, and they will want to ride some positive momentum ahead of a three-game road trip to face the Pittsburgh Pirates.
