For years, the Cleveland Guardians waited for infielder Gabriel Arias to blossom and develop into a starting-caliber player.
He has been getting MLB playing time since 2022, and he failed every year until 2024.
His case is another reminder that prospect development is not always a smooth ride.
The road to stardom is often full of unexpected twists and long slumps, and this can happen to anyone: even top prospects can take some time to show the full extent of their potential.
The jump in talent between Triple-A and the majors is the biggest on the ladder, so young players entering the league often require multiple years to figure things out.
Well, it looks like we could be witnessing Arias’ breakout, at long last.
After going yard in the Guardians’ loss on Wednesday, he is up to four home runs in the season.
His last five games have been a reminder of what he’s capable of.
“Cleveland #Guardians Gabriel Arias hit his 4th HR of the season tonight vs the Orioles 424 feet and 108.9 mph off the bat. Arias’ last 5 games: 8-17 5R 3HR 6RBI 2BB .471 AVG,” Guardians Prospective posted on X.

For the season, he is sporting an amazing 159 wRC+.
Considering his strikeout rate is still high at 30.5 percent, that wRC+ is bound to come back down to earth a bit, but the gains he has made at the plate this year are notable and should stick to some degree.
It all started to click last year when the Guardians demoted him to Columbus in the summer after running a below-average 70 wRC+.
He went on to deliver a 130 wRC+ in Triple-A after making some changes and shined in winter ball.
Arias is another example that prospect development requires patience.
The reward is that they now appear to have a building block in their infield for years to come.
