After Friday night’s bullpen implosion, the Cleveland Guardians needed a statement performance on Saturday. Gavin Williams delivered one of the best starts of his career, and this time the bullpen protected the lead.
Cleveland beat Baltimore 4-2 at Progressive Field on Saturday night, moving to 12-10 on the season and salvaging at least a split of the four-game home series against the Orioles. Gavin Williams was dominant, Brayan Rocchio provided the big swing, and for the first time in what felt like a while, the late innings went the way they were supposed to.

Williams was nothing short of magnificent.
He struck out 11 batters in seven innings, retiring the last 11 Orioles he faced after allowing a leadoff home run to Leody Taveras in the fourth that had given Baltimore a 1-0 advantage. Williams allowed just two hits and one walk on 100 pitches, with 73 of them going for strikes.

Williams now leads the major leagues with 40 strikeouts.
The offense did its part, though it took patience to get there. Cleveland was scoreless and hitless through four innings against Dean Kremer before Brayan Rocchio changed everything in the fifth with a three-run home run.

Hunter Gaddis handled the eighth inning and gave up a home run to Gunnar Henderson with two outs that made it a 3-2 game. But Bo Naylor provided the necessary insurance in the bottom of the eighth with a leadoff home run, his first of the season, to push the lead to 4-2.

Cade Smith came on for the ninth and struck out three batters to earn his fifth save in seven chances.
Friday was painful. Saturday was the antidote.
Joey Cantillo takes the mound Sunday with a chance to give Cleveland a series win before the Guardians turn their attention to the Houston Astros later this week.
