The 2022 campaign was special for the Cleveland Guardians in many ways.
They won their division with 92 victories, they had a brand of baseball they popularized, and they even won their AL Wild Card matchup against the Tampa Bay Rays in dramatic fashion.
They also had a very competitive series against the New York Yankees but lost in the ALDS.
Behind all those triumphs and clutch wins there was a young outfielder who looked like a future lineup mainstay: Oscar Gonzalez.
Baseball is full of surprises, though, and Gonzalez couldn’t keep his place in the organization.
He is now getting a renewed chance to earn a spot on an MLB roster, this time from the San Diego Padres.
“Former #Guardians OF Oscar Gonzalez has signed a minor league contract with the San Diego Padres for the 2025 season,” Guardians Prospective posted on X.

Gonzalez joined the Guardians as an international free agent in 2014 and made his MLB debut in 2022.
He became a playoffs hero in Cleveland that year.
With a 15-inning home run, he sent the Guardians to the Division Series and eliminated the Rays in an unforgettable moment.
Then, in the ALDS against the Yanks, he hit a walk-off single in Game 3 to give Cleveland a 2-1 series lead, even though they couldn’t keep it when everything was said and done.
With a 123 regular season wRC+ and the playoffs heroics, he looked like a future starter in Cleveland’s outfield.
2023 was horrendous for him and he lost his spot on the team due to a 48 wRC+ in 180 trips to the plate.
He joined the Yankees and spend a good portion of the 2024 season in their minor league system.
He elected free agency ahead of the off-season and is now trying his luck with the Padres.
