The Cleveland Guardians opened their postseason run with a disappointing 2-1 loss to the Detroit Tigers in Game 1 of the American League Wild Card Series.
Progressive Field buzzed with playoff energy, but the game quickly turned into a tense pitchers’ duel where offensive chances were hard to find.
Cleveland’s lineup struggled to find rhythm against a sharp Detroit pitching staff that kept them off balance throughout the day.
While the Guardians’ pitching held their ground, the lack of timely hitting proved costly in dropping the opener at home.

Manager Stephen Vogt became the primary target of fan frustration following the defeat.
One fan wrote on X, “I know it’s insane to say you should blame the back to back manager of the year but what the actual hell was that today Vogt? Naylor and Jhonk batting in the 8th? JRod playing at all? Infield back with a runner on third in a clear bunt spot? Good lord man.”
Another fan commented, “Vogt just cost us the series because of his inability to create a good lineup. He also refuses to take out players because he doesn’t want to be wrong. Jhonkensy has no business on this roster or at 1st base. Rodriguez should have been out after the 1st inning. Fire him please.”
The criticism continued as another fan shared, “Runner on third and no outs. How in the name of Tris Speaker’s ghost do you not try and lay down a bunt there? Absolute bed shitting by ‘manager of the year.'”
One discouraged fan simply wrote, “The season is over change the name back so we at least have our dignity.”
Cleveland’s remarkable turnaround this season saw them erase a 15.5-game deficit to capture the AL Central division title.
That surge created high expectations heading into October, but the postseason has exposed some concerning weaknesses.
Injuries and suspensions affected key contributors at different points, and the lineup has occasionally faltered against playoff-caliber pitching.
With the series still alive, the Guardians face a critical Game 2 where avoiding elimination becomes paramount.
The team’s resilience carried them through September’s historic run, and that same determination will be tested again against their division rivals.
Whether Cleveland can recreate that late-season magic remains the question as fans wonder if their comeback was sustainable or just a fortunate streak.
