The Cleveland Guardians have an unfortunate history of seeing some of their best players leave the franchise before their careers end. A recent list that includes Manny Ramirez, Jim Thome, CC Sabathia, and even more currently, Francisco Lindor, means Hall of Fame-caliber stars have eventually wound up elsewhere.
Not this time. The Guardians have made sure that Jose Ramirez will fulfill his expressed wish to finish his career with the organization by giving him a seven-year contract extension that runs through the 2032 season, when he will turn 40 years old.
President of baseball operations Chris Antonetti spoke out about Jose Ramirez’s contract extension, saying it will allow the player to become “an icon in Cleveland sports history.”
“Jose was really clear about his priorities (four years ago). He said he wanted to spend his entire career in Cleveland, he wanted his jersey retired here, he wanted to go to the Hall of Fame as a Cleveland Guardian, and he wanted to win a World Series here. Four years later, we’ve seen him make incredible progress toward each of those goals, and I have no doubt that by the end of this contract, he will have achieved them. When this contract is done and Jose’s time here is complete, he will have established himself as not just one of the best baseball players of our generation, but an icon in Cleveland sports history,” Antonetti said.

The jersey retirement is a certainty, and it looks like the Hall of Fame will be as well. Jose Ramirez is likely to eventually hold every significant offensive record in franchise history, and as one of the best players in the game, he will have several more seasons to add to an already strong Hall candidacy.
Winning a World Series may prove to be more difficult. Though the Guardians are a perennial playoff team that has dominated the AL Central during Jose Ramirez’s 13 seasons with the club, the ultimate postseason success has remained elusive, with a loss in the 2024 ALCS the most recent significant setback.
That’s in addition to a Game 7 loss to the Chicago Cubs in the 2016 World Series, which would have been Cleveland’s first MLB championship since 1948. Coming up on 80 years, it is by far the longest current drought in the sport.
But if anyone deserves to win that title in Cleveland, it is Jose Ramirez. Like with his previous contract extension in 2022, he took a significant hometown discount on this one in an effort to allow the Guardians to acquire more talent around him.
Though this offseason has been discouragingly quiet on that front, the sides now have more time to make that long-awaited dream a reality.
