Through roughly one week of the 2026 MLB season, it’s starting to look like this could be one of the most talented rookie classes the league has seen in quite some time. Stars are popping up everywhere, but nobody has been off to a start as hot as Cleveland Guardians outfielder Chase DeLauter.
DeLauter smoked a clutch two-run homer in the seventh inning of Cleveland’s home opener on Friday to solidify a 4-1 victory over the Chicago Cubs and move the Guardians to 5-3 on the year. It was DeLauter’s fifth homer of the young season, which tied him for the league lead with Shea Langeliers of the Athletics and even helped him make a bit of history.
In his postgame presser, he talked about his hot start. His confidence shined through with a simple three-word message.
“I’m a hitter,” said DeLauter.

Guardians fans have known DeLauter was capable of greatness for years, and the only thing holding him back has been injuries. He had another scare earlier in the week after fouling a ball off his foot, but the off day came at a great time and he showed on Friday that he is clearly doing alright.
It has been a strong start for the team overall even though the Guardians had to begin the season on the road, playing two of the best teams in the league, the Seattle Mariners and Los Angeles Dodgers. Cleveland passed the early test, and if some other members of the lineup can start raking even close to how much DeLauter has been, this fan base could be in for a fun summer.
Of course, the concern is still all related to DeLauter’s health. He has plenty of protection batting between Steven Kwan and Jose Ramirez, and if he can stay on the field, he could certainly make a run at Rookie of the Year.
