The Cleveland Guardians have lost four of their last five games. The offense has gone through a stretch that has frustrated fans and drawn legitimate criticism. The losing streak brought the team back to .500 and raised real questions about where this season is heading.
Chase DeLauter is not worried. And the reason he is not worried says something important about what is being built in that clubhouse.
After Wednesday’s 3-1 win over the Tampa Bay Rays that snapped the four-game skid, DeLauter shared his perspective on what he believes will ultimately define this Cleveland team when the season is over.
“I’ll keep saying it. Great group of guys. We have a great group of veterans that are kind of leading the pack. And then, feels like us young guys have kind of played together for a little bit. We know what we’ve got. We’re close. That’s exactly what you want. You go out there regardless of what happens — good at-bats, bad at-bats, good plays, bad plays. We’re there for each other. It’s going to result in some good wins at the end of the year,” DeLauter said.

DeLauter is 24 years old, but he is not new to this group. He has come up through the Cleveland system alongside many of the young players now finding their footing at the major league level. He has seen Brayan Rocchio develop into one of the most consistent infielders on the roster. He has watched Angel Martinez transform into a legitimate offensive threat. He has been part of a young core that has grown together, failed together, and learned together in ways that do not always show up on a box score but absolutely show up in September and October when the games matter most.
Jose Ramirez has been the heartbeat of this franchise for years and his presence in the clubhouse is something that younger players have consistently pointed to. Rhys Hoskins brings playoff experience and a professional approach to the game every day.
Good at-bats, bad at-bats, good plays, bad plays. That is a player describing a team that does not fracture when things go wrong, which is the most important quality any group can have over the course of a 162-game season. Bad stretches happen to every team. Losing streaks happen.
Cleveland just endured their worst stretch of the season, losing four straight games while being shut out twice and scoring just 2 runs over a 27-inning window. The response on Wednesday was a 3-1 win behind a Gavin Williams gem and just enough timely hitting to break Tampa Bay’s six-game winning streak. One win does not erase the concerns, but it does reveal something about the character of the group.
