Currently sitting just outside the American League Wild Card race, the Cleveland Guardians face questions about whether to buy or sell with several weeks remaining in the season.
Among the players drawing interest is All-Star closer Emmanuel Clase.
His name has surfaced in trade discussions as teams search for bullpen help.
The Guardians’ front office remains open to listening to offers, but veteran Cleveland analyst Bruce Drennan believes moving the elite reliever would require something special.
“I told you that I wouldn’t trade Clase unless the team is given a godfather offer they can’t refuse. Clase is signed through next season, with club options for ’27 and ’28. He’s one of the best closers in the major leagues. I can easily see the Guards coming back and winning the division next year,” Drennan said.

Clase’s contract makes him particularly attractive to potential suitors.
He carries a $6.4 million guarantee for 2026 with club options worth $10 million each for 2027 and 2028.
That cost control, combined with his dominant performance, positions him as one of baseball’s most valuable bullpen assets.
The Guardians could use the return to address their offensive struggles. The team has dealt with inconsistent production at the plate throughout the season.
Some believe acquiring an impact bat could help push Cleveland back into contention.
However, the organization has reportedly set a steep asking price.
Sources indicate the front office would need to be overwhelmed to consider parting with Clase.
The development of reliever Cade Smith has provided some bullpen depth, but losing an elite closer rarely works out favorably.
For a franchise caught between rebuilding and competing, keeping proven talent might represent the safer path forward.
